For its fall 2016 concert, BCCO will perform two Requiems — the Süssmayr version of Mozart’s Requiem in D minor (K. 626) and the Requiem in C minor by Luigi Cherubini — on January 6, 7, and 8.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem in D minor (K. 626) was composed in 1791 but remained unfinished at the time of his death. BCCO will perform the version completed by Franz Xaver Süssmayr in 1792.
Cherubini’s Requiem in C minor was first performed in 1816, at a commemoration service for Louis XVI of France on the twenty-third anniversary of his beheading during the French Revolution. Described by Ludwig von Beethoven as a “model requiem,” the piece has been revered and studied by generations of composers.
Ming Luke, Music Director, will conduct. Soloists for these two works will be Ariana Strahl, soprano, Silvie Jensen, mezzo soprano, Kirk Dougherty, tenor, and Matt Hanscom, baritone.
