There have been many moments of “musical magic” in my experience with BCCO. One that stands out occurred soon after I joined the chorus. We were performing the Brahms Deutsche Requiem at St Joseph’s. In those years, the concerts often fell on Mother’s Day, and so it was with this performance. I was thinking about my mother who had passed a few years earlier. Marcelle Dronkers was the soprano soloist. She was sitting in the pew with her son who was about 7 or 8. After singing the beautiful 5th movement solo–As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you– she sat next to her son and gave him a little maternal shoulder hug. I was emotionally undone. I somehow regained enough composure to finish the concert. I will never forget that moment.
