Street Requiem is a 50-minute cantata written in 2014 by Andy Payne, Kathleen McGuire and Jonathon Welch to evoke compassion and empathy for those who live and have died on our streets. The August 25 performance will be a benefit for the Berkeley Women’s Daytime Drop-in Center to support its programs for homeless women and their children.
Derek Tam will conduct a chamber orchestra and 100-voice chorus of singers from choruses around the Bay Area. Tenor Brian Thorsett, who has performed extensively with BCCO, and mezzo soprano Molly Mahoney will be the soloists.
The Berkeley concert will be the East Bay premiere of Street Requiem, composed to bring a sense of peace, remembrance and hope to communities struggling with homelessness. It employs musical styles reflecting multicultural and multi-faith traditions.
Street Requiem is sponsored by Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra (BCCO), the Berkeley Women’s Community Chorus, and First Church Berkeley.
Admission is free. Donations will be collected for the Women’s Day-time Drop-in Center.
