When I was 11 or 12, I watched Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts with the NY Philharmonic on tv. I was totally in love. I cut Bernstein’s picture out of what is now the pink section (it wasn’t pink back then), framed it and put it on my nightstand. When West Side Story came out I fell for the leader of the Puerto Rican gang, the Greek George Chakiris and forgot all about Lenny. I am now in love with the Chichester Psalms. Getting a copy of Bernstein’s 1965 recording of the piece with the Israeli Philarmonic and the Vienna Boys Choir took an order to Amazon UK and waiting a month for it to arrive. Totally worth the wait. It is thrilling!
