This week we were joined by former BCCO accompanist, Collin Whitfield, and his wife, Erin, a soprano. The performed together from their Michigan home, and answered our questions afterward. What a pleasure to hear them play and sing together, including one of Collin’s own compositions. The program:
Ming started off the evening with a presentation on one of his favorite musical concepts, the Circle of Fifths (see the illustration below.) He presented us with several examples, including: Britten, A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (first :22 seconds), Brahms Requiem (6th movement, from 4:30 – 5:30), and Handel/Halvorsen Passacaglia.
Julia led us in the weekly warm-up and round, and talked about our upcoming virtual choir project, Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus. And Paul rounded out the evening with a deviation from his usual classical piano pieces, and played for us a jazzy Blue and Sentimental from Count Basie. The sing-a-long for the evening was Nat King Cole’s Nature Boy.
