We were all thrilled to welcome Ming Luke to BCCO in 2011, after a thorough and careful search. To celebrate the occasion, we had a wonderful reception, and — in true BCCO tradition — a song, to the tune of If I Were A Bell, from Guys and Dolls. It was performed in high style by two of our own — Jarred Miyamoto-Mills and Sheila Singleton.
With apologies and thanks to the great Frank Loesser
Ask us how did we manage to find such a special musician?
Well, we knew he’d be great just as soon as he aced the audition!
Sure, he’s got the credentials galore
A director who’ll lead us through change –
Smart and skilled, yet he brings even more
And can sing in a four octave range!
Ask us how good we feel now we know just for whom we’ll be singin’
Well folks, here is the score, time to open the door and let Ming in!
And if we were a bell we’d be changing the sound that we ring
And instead of “ding-dong” we’d be ringing out for Ming!
Ask us how to describe the whole positive vibe he is bringing
Ask us how we will manage to actually sing while we’re grinning!
Be it Beethoven, Mozart or Bach
Ming’s an orchestra leader with flair
And he’ll get the whole chorus to rock
That’s why we are all walking on air!
Ask us how we found someone who truly respects our tradition
Ask us why we’re so sure he is so perfect for the position!
We can’t wait to start singing on Monday nights this fall and spring
Hear our voices take flight as we learn to sing with Ming!
Oh, if we were sopranos, our high Cs would quickly start soaring
And if we were all altos on risers, they’d rise from the flooring!
And the basses would sing a low “bong”
And resound like a happy Big Ben
While the tenors would break out in song —
With the women as loud as the men!
Ask us how great it is that our Ming is so brilliant and handsome
Ask us how strange it feels that he’s younger than some of our grandsons!
Now our future is bright, and we’re high as a kite on a string
How the rafters will ring when we sing this fall with Ming!
